history

Establishment

The chapel was built from 1928 to 1929 by the Society of Staufen Friends . The design - following a suggestion from the pastor of St. Nikolaus - comes from the carpenter Brandauer, who also took over the construction management. During the construction work, after an earthquake, a large boulder broke off at the summit and damaged the roof of the chapel, the damage could only be repaired in 1929 after the snow melted. The chapel was inaugurated on June 29, 1929.

Paul Leitner, the last living co-builder of the chapel, died in December 2013 at the age of 98.

restoration

In 1952 the doors were renewed and in 1962 the church painter Georg Gschwendner created the chapel's altarpiece. In 1973 the chapel was completely renovated , during which the roof and turrets were renewed, and in 1987 another restoration took place.

In 2017, more than 50 years after the general renovation, the roof and ridge turrets were renovated again, and the Staufen friends did more than 300 voluntary hours for this . In the work were carpenters , masons , Spengler and other helpers involved. Some of the material was flown to the chapel by helicopter, but much was carried up the mountain by the Staufen friends themselves. Due to the limited space and the exposed location, it is not possible to erect scaffolding at the chapel, which makes work on the building even more difficult.

description

The chapel has a rectangular floor plan and was partly built into the rock. The stone building has a gable roof with shingles made of larch wood and a roof turret. Above the portal with two wooden door leaves there is a crucifix and a small window in the western wall.

In the stone altar niche hangs the altar painting " The Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor " by Georg Gschwendner, flanked by two angels . To the left of the altarpiece there is a statue of Mary and to the right a statue of the risen Savior . A small bell hangs on the wall between the portal and the window.

To the left of the chapel there is a memorial plaque in the rock for the members of the DAV who fell during both world wars, as well as a memorial plaque for the innkeepers of the Staufenhaus who were murdered in a robbery in 1993.

Todays use

In addition to the irregularly held small-scale devotions , the Staufen Mass, which - depending on the weather conditions - usually takes place on the first Sunday after the summer solstice , is the biggest event in connection with the chapel. The evening before, the Staufen friends light up the summit ridge and the path in front of the chapel with innumerable fires when night falls. Many more believers come to the chapel on Sunday to attend the service.
