The Hochstaufen ( 1771  m above sea level ) is a striking rocky mountain and a well-known eye-catcher that rises between Bad Reichenhall , Piding and Anger (Berchtesgadener Land) . It belongs to the Staufen mountain range and is the easternmost mountain in the Chiemgau Alps . From the summit you have a good panoramic view, especially of the Berchtesgaden Alps .

Just below the highest point on the south side, in an exposed location, is the Reichenhaller Haus , an accommodation hut run by the German Alpine Club in summer . It is the highest hut in the Chiemgau Alps. From there you can watch the sunset over the Chiemsee , to the east you can see Salzburg with its airport , which can also be seen at night through the lighting.

The name Staufen comes from Middle High German ("stouf") and means "steep rock". The state border between Bavaria and Salzburg ran over the ridge from around 1350 to 1810. Mining was carried out until the middle of the 18th century , the most famous of which was the Doktor-Oswald-Stollen, which was only 60 meters below the summit. Lead and zinc were mined.

Routes

There are over a thousand meters of altitude to climb when climbing the Staufen. Although there are routes to the summit that are not technically demanding, a good to very good physical condition and a corresponding amount of experience in alpine terrain are basic requirements for all routes to the summit.

  • Bad Reichenhall ( Padinger Alm ) - Bartlmahd - Reichenhaller Haus - Hochstaufen (normal route, easy)
  • Bad Reichenhall (Padinger Alm) - Buchmahd - "Stone Hunters" - Reichenhaller House - Hochstaufen (challenging)
  • Bad Reichenhall (Padinger Alm) - Goldtropfsteig (challenging, not signposted)
  • Piding ( Urwies or Mauthausen ) - Mairalm - "Steinerne Jäger" - Reichenhaller Haus - Hochstaufen (challenging)
  • Piding (Urwies or Mauthausen) - Mairalm - Pidinger Klettersteig - Hochstaufen (very difficult, only with appropriate equipment and experience)
  • Piding or Aufham near Anger - Steiner Alm - north flank - Hochstaufen (medium)
  • Inzell or Gasthaus Adlgaß - Frillensee - Steiner Alm - north face - Hochstaufen (medium)
  • Crossing from Zwiesel - Zennokopf - Mittelstaufen - Reichenhaller Haus - Hochstaufen (challenging)
  • Crossing from Zwieselalm - Barthlmahd - Reichenhaller Haus - Hochstaufen (easy)
  • Crossing from Fuderheuberg - "Steinerne Jäger" - Reichenhaller Haus - Hochstaufen (demanding)

The Pidinger via ferrata was reopened in 2003 and is one of the most difficult via ferratas in Germany.

Myths and legends

A legend tells of the origin of the Stone Hunters , via which a popular but demanding path leads to the summit, that it is about two hunters who were turned to stone there. Instead of going to prayer, they mock the believers when they hear the bell from the valley. But when the two try to shoot a chamois, it turns into the devil. The hunters try to flee, but when fog picks up, all you hear is a choked scream. When the fog has cleared, you can see the two hunters, frozen to stone, now forever bound to the place of their iniquity.

Others

The Association of Friends Staufen takes care of the maintenance and care of the Staufen chapel near the Reichenhaller house. The Staufen Mass is held there once a year , which many hikers and believers like to attend. On the eve of mass, a Saturday around the summer solstice , the chapel and the summit ridge are illuminated with countless fires. Most of the material for this is brought to the summit by the club members on foot long before the fair.

Swarm tremors occur at Hochstaufen . Seismometer stations are distributed around the mountain for their research . These (weak) earthquakes with a focus depth of one to four kilometers are correlated with the rainfall on the Hochstaufen.

On August 3, 1921, a forest fire broke out at Hochstaufen that lasted for two weeks. The areas below and above the Bartelmahd were affected .

The mountain achieved national fame when the couple who ran the Reichenhaller house were murdered in a robbery in September 1993.

The Reichenhaller Haus was supplied by the pack animal company from the Bad Reichenhall barracks until the helicopter was deployed .
