Hanseatic day of modern times

Hanseatic Days 2005 at the town hall of Tartu

The Hanseatic Days of the Modern Age are the meetings of the New Hanseatic League that are held annually in one of the member cities. Former Hanseatic cities re-established the Hanseatic League in the Dutch city of Zwolle in 1980 in order to revive the cross-border Hanseatic idea, to promote the self-confidence of the Hanseatic cities and to develop cooperation. Since then, the New Hanseatic League has been the world's largest voluntary urban community.

In addition to the international New Hanseatic League, independent regional Hanseatic city federations have been founded, the largest being the Westphalian Hanseatic League in 1983. Around 45 former Hanseatic cities from Westphalia belong to it, the office is in Herford . The Westphalian Hanseatic League organizes its own Hanseatic Days, in 2017 they took place on July 1st and 2nd in Wipperfürth .

development

Since 1990, great importance has been attached to integrating the Hanseatic cities previously located in the Eastern Bloc.

Hanseatic Days in Tartu 2007

At the meeting of the Hanseatic Commission in Stade in 1993, the then around 100 Hanseatic cities from 11 countries ( Estonia , Finland , Latvia , Lithuania , the Netherlands , Belgium , Norway , Sweden , Poland , Russia and Germany ) decided as a joint project as part of a solidarity campaign of all Hanseatic cities, to restore the St. Nicholas Cathedral in the Hanseatic Courtyard of Novgorod . The cities of Visby (Sweden) and Bergen (Norway) took the lead in this matter . A total of around € 325,000 was raised from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Baltic states . Work began in July 1994 and was completed in June 1999.

On the 34th Hanseatic Day of Modern Times in Lübeck 2014, the European Hanseatic Museum was to be opened in the north of Lübeck's old town . The opening was postponed to 2015, mainly due to significant archaeological finds. It is intended to bring visitors closer to the history of the Hanseatic League, what it consisted of and what it did. For this, visitors from Lübeck travel to the four Hanse offices , the Hansekontor in Bruges , the Tyske Brygge in Bergen , the Peterhof in Novgorod and the Stalhof in London .
