The 34th Hanseatic Day of Modern Times (full name 34th International Hanseatic Day ) took place from May 22nd to 25th, 2014 in Lübeck . It was under the motto "Lübeck goodbye".

Almost 500,000 visitors took part in Hanseatic Day, 100,000 of them at the opening event on May 22nd in front of the Holsten Gate . It was the second modern Hanseatic day in Lübeck after 1983 since the New Hanseatic League was founded in Zwolle in 1980 . Delegates and cultural groups from 122 Hanseatic cities from 15 countries were represented.

The Hanseatic Day was opened by Federal President Joachim Gauck .

During the Hanseatic League, the 1,600 delegates accepted two new cities into the Hanseatic League: Edinburgh (Scotland) and Malbork (Poland). The prerequisite for admission is that the cities belonged to the Hanseatic League between the middle of the 12th century and the middle of the 17th century. With the addition of Edinburgh and Malbork, 185 of the 225 medieval Hanseatic cities according to the current research city belong to the modern Hanseatic League.

According to initial estimates, the city of Lübeck had spent 1.6 million euros on the event with 370 program items. Stages had been set up in front of the Holsten Gate, on the Koberg , the Klingenberg and the market , among others . There were also music events on the Maritime Mile on the Trave and in the inner courtyard of the Lübeck University of Music .

For the rock symphony "Legends of Rock", which was performed in front of the Holstentor on May 24th, Bernd Ruf had put together an orchestra made up of students from the Lübeck University of Music, the Lübeck Symphony Orchestra and students mainly from Hanseatic cities on the Baltic Sea; The singers were Hannes Braun and the rapper Danny Fresh .

One of the highlights of the Hanseatic Day was a simulated sea battle at the Burgtorhafen, in which the Lisa von Lübeck , the Kieler Hansekogge , the Ubena von Bremen and the Wissemara participated.

At the closing event in front of the Holsten Gate, Lübeck's mayor and Hanseatic foreman Bernd Saxe presented the Hanseatic flag to Ando Kiviberg, Mayor of Viljandi (Estonia) as the organizer of the 35th Hanseatic Days of Modern Times in 2015.

Costs and income

According to the final invoice published in March 2015, the 34th Modern Hanseatic Convention cost around 1.8 million euros. A total of 703,400 euros were raised through cultural funding and entrance fees, leaving a municipal subsidy of around 1.1 million euros. That was 87,000 euros less than the citizenry , the city council of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck, had approved as a net grant. In contrast, there were around 400,000 visitors to the events.
