Klingenberg (Lübeck)

The Klingenberg is an important place in the south of Lübeck's old town . The market for forged products once took place here. To the north, Schmiedestrasse branches off to the left . It forms the urban counterpart to Koberg (once a market for brewery products) in the north of the old town island. The two main axes of the Lübeck road system ( Königstrasse and Breite Strasse / Sandstrasse ), which run in north-south direction, unite at both squares .

Name interpretation

It is assumed that the name refers to a former ("sounding") source here. This is also supported by the names of the side streets leading down to the Trave ( Depenau = "deep Au", Kiesau = "gravelly Au").

Development

The historical buildings on the Klingenberg were almost completely destroyed in the bombing raid on Lübeck on March 29, 1942 (exception see below).

Department store of the consumer association

The department store of the consumer association is located on the corner property Sandstrasse 24–28 / Schmiedestrasse. It was built in 1928/29 in the style of Hamburg office buildings. This building burned down after the bombing in 1942, but the structure was preserved and is still worth seeing today.

Victory Fountain

The Victory Fountain

The Victory Fountain was built in 1875 to commemorate the war against France in 1870/71 and demolished in 1935.

Hotel city of Hamburg

The Hotel Stadt Hamburg was a traditional hotel on the western edge of the Klingenberg. After being destroyed in 1942, it was not rebuilt. Today there is a bank building which, until it was built over in the 1970s, was an extension of the department store on Klingenberg and connected to it by a closed bridge. In front of the hotel were two life-size lion sculptures , designed by Christian Daniel Rauch and made by the Royal Prussian Iron Foundry in cast iron. They survived the bombing and were set up in front of the Holsten Gate in 1949, where they are still a popular photo opportunity today.

present

In the course of the redesign carried out in 2010–2012, the lanes of Sandstrasse and Mühlenstrasse (up to the confluence with Königstrasse) were significantly narrowed, so that the sidewalks on both sides were given considerably more space. Instead of the historical fountain (see there), water features were built into the paving. The Schmiedestraße became a dead end due to lowerable road blocks, so that it is no longer possible to drive through from Holstenstraße to Klingenberg. The full-surface paving of the square with gray granite slabs creates the impression of a spacious room design. The new hotel building on Schmiedestrasse fits into the overall impression without contradiction.
