course

Sandstrasse is the extension of Lübeck's main pedestrian zone , Breite Strasse , to the south and leads from the Kohlmarkt / Wahmstrasse intersection over Klingenberg and Mühlenstrasse out of the city to the south in the direction of the suburb of Lübeck-St. Jürgen out. The name comes from the sands of the old town hill Bucu , on which the road runs.

It is closed to private traffic and is an important route for public transport .

The sand road is in the area that was hardest hit by the bombing in March 1942 . The only listed building is a brick expressionist department store building No. 24–28 ( Kaufhaus am Klingenberg ) from the late 1920s.

urban planning

The current design of this shopping street is the result of the urban planning of the reconstruction . After the completion of the Haerder Center shopping center , Sandstrasse is now (2010) to be upgraded to resemble a pedestrian zone as an extension of Breite Strasse. In 2007, the large-scale demolitions for the new shopping center gave one an impression of what the city must have looked like after the bombing of the Second World War. The new building with over 10,000 m² of retail space was opened on October 30, 2008.
