The Adolf-Reichwein-Realschule (short: ARR ) is one of three Realschulen in the city of Witten . The school is named after the pedagogue and anti-fascist resistance fighter Adolf Reichwein .

history

Founded in 1963, it started teaching in 1964 with 143 students, four teachers and a school principal. In 1965 the school moved into a building on the direct border between the Witten-Mitte and Annen districts , which led to the school being viewed as the Annener Schule from then on. Until the establishment of the Realschule, the districts of Annen and Rüdinghausen in particular were considered to be undersupplied with regard to the school supply. With the establishment of a secondary school, this supply gap was closed.

Bilingual teaching

Today's secondary school places an elective focus on bilingual teaching (since 2001). In addition to the normal English lessons, individual subjects, for example geography or history, are taught in English for students in special classes in one grade. The learning workload should correspond to that in the parallel classes, the same textbooks are used.

school-building

The former main school building, two years after the ARR moved.
demolished original school building, 2013

Although the original school building was not completed until 1965, it was already in need of considerable renovation at the end of the 1990s due to structural defects. Asbestos was also used in the construction.

In some heated discussions, two opposing points of view were represented. On the one hand, the position of the city council to abandon the building and move the school to another building; on the other hand, the wish of the school caretaker, but also the citizens of Annen and Rüdinghauser, to renovate the school in order to preserve the original location. This request was rejected by the city administration with reference to the increased financial requirements in the event of a renovation. An assessment that later turned out to be wrong, as the school building into which the ARR was finally to move also revealed itself to be in great need of renovation. In the long term, however, the city will save school travel costs, as the school districts were tailored when the school moved to significantly reduce expenses in this area. However, the new location is more difficult to reach with public transport than the old location in Annen.

In 2005, the Adolf-Reichwein-Realschule moved into the premises of the Sonnenscheinschule am Sonnenschein in Witten. The sunshine school was originally a secondary school, after its closure the premises were used for a few years by the Witten Schiller-Gymnasium for its orientation level.

The school is therefore no longer in the direct catchment area of Annen and Rüdinghausen, but on the outskirts of the Mitte district .

The school is operated in a public-private partnership model.

In 2013 the original school building was demolished.

Seal project

The school was certified as a Siegel school by the Siegel project for the period from 2008 to 2011 . This recognizes the special efforts of the school for the further professional advancement of its students. The project was initiated by the Bertelsmann Foundation ; the certification is based on a catalog of criteria in which a committee made up of representatives from companies, chambers (IHK, HWK), associations, chambers, school inspectors, teachers, trainees, parents and trade unions assess the extent to which the School promotes and supports a career choice of its students. This can be done by organizing and offering internships or by including information on occupations and career choices in the classroom.

For example, the school presents job profiles on the school server and works with various companies in the area.

Language tests

The school encourages students to take voluntary participation in class-based, extra-curricular language exams, including the KET , FLyers (Young Learners English Certificate) and PET exams designed by Cambridge University and administered by university representatives . Many students have already passed these exams successfully and even with distinction.

Sports offers

The Adolf-Reichwein-Realschule is the first school in Witten to include rugby , a sport from England, in its school program. In October 2007, trainer and teacher Stefan Leukefeld, with around 40 students from the school and three teachers (Peter Schütze, Stefan Leukefeld and Pascal Tantalidis) started offering this sport. Stefan Leukefeld came up with the idea with his teacher friend, Mr. Roth from the Grashof Gymnasium in Essen .

Others

At the school it is possible to take part in a group for rhythmic gymnastics . The procurement of sports equipment was funded by the school association. The group regularly takes part in competitions.

There is a medical service at the school, in which around 15 pupils trained by the DRK district association in Witten provide first aid until the rescue service arrives in the event of injuries and accidents during breaks and at school parties.

Since the 2001/2002 school year, the school has had a dispute settlement project in which, as part of a working group, students in grades 8 and 9 are taught how to conduct discussions and resolve conflicts. After this one-year introduction, the students are available during breaks in a room made available for this purpose as mediators of disputes between students. The working group works with two similar projects from other schools in the area.
