history

The company was founded in 1879 by Rudolf Darbo (d'Arbo) in the old Austrian town of Gorizia - today Friuli-Venezia Giulia - as a fruit steam factory (distillery). In 1918 the family moved to Stans. There the Darbo family initially ran an inn. Son Adolf Darbo sen. After completing his apprenticeship as a pastry chef, he worked in the local company and began producing jam and filling honey at the same time. Later he came up with the idea of offering small portions for gastronomy. After the Second World War , Tyrol increasingly became a holiday region. The demand for jam and honey increased, and Darbo became number one in jam making. In 1970 Klaus Darbo joined his parents' business. At the end of the 1970s he took over the management of the company. In addition to supplying the catering trade, he expanded the sales market for Darbo jams and honey to include the food trade.

Klaus Darbo (1945–2014) created the “Darbo Naturrein” line. “Naturrein” is a protected term that, according to the food code, jams are only allowed to wear if they are made exclusively from fruit, preserving sugar and lemon juice. A few years after the introduction of the “Naturrein” line, Darbo became the most popular jam in Austria. Today it is well known in Austria by a good 90%. In Austria, Darbo has a value-based market share for jams of approx. 60% (2015: 61%), for honey over 40% and for fruit syrup over 15%.

In 2008 the company was able to increase its sales compared to 2007 from 93.0 million euros to 99.7 million euros. Darbo's export quota in 2009 was 38.9%. In 2015 it was 50.1%.

Since June 2009, Adolf Darbo AG has been 98% family-owned again, after around 42.4% of the shares were bought back by the Swiss Hero Group . 2% are in free float. Martin Darbo, one of Klaus Darbo's four sons, took over management of the company in mid-2009.
