Guy Helminger
Guy Helminger (born January 20, 1963 in Esch-sur-Alzette , Luxembourg ) is a Luxembourgish writer who writes primarily in German.
life and work
Helminger studied German and philosophy in Luxembourg, Heidelberg and Cologne. He worked as a bartender, actor, assistant director and 3D graphic artist. Helminger has lived and worked in Cologne since 1985. He is a member of the PEN Center Germany .
As an author, he initially emerged primarily with poetry, plays and radio plays. In 2001 he published his first short prose volume ( Rost ). In 2004 he was awarded the 3sat Prize at the Ingeborg Bachmann Competition for his story Pelargonium . Another volume of stories ( Something is always missing ) was published by Suhrkamp in August 2005 .
In 2006 Guy Helminger was city clerk in Hyderabad (India). From February to March 2007, traveled Helminger as part of the Foreign Office funded project West-Eastern Divan by Tehran . He blogged about his stay there for Deutsche Welle . His notes from Iran appeared in 2018 under the title "The Alley of Teeth". In 2009 he was author in residence at the German House in Sanaa (Yemen). In 2015 he traveled to South Africa as part of the Rhine-South-Africa-Fellowship and blogged for the Sylt Foundation. In 2017 he took part in the "Trauma and Reconciliation" project in Myanmar and in 2018 in the "Gong Laut Festival" in Bali, which focused on the island's ecological problems.
In the spring of 2007, a new edition of his first novel, Die Ruhe der Schlammkröte , was published by Kiepenheuer & Witsch , commented on by Manuel Andrack . In autumn 2007, Suhrkamp published the novel Morgen was already . In 2010 Eichborn published the novel New Brazil about Luxembourg farmers who emigrated to Brazil in 1828, linked to the story of migrants from Montenegro at the end of the 20th century. Helminger devotes himself to socio-political issues in his plays. In Venezuela , young people from precarious backgrounds try to shape their lives by designing the utopia of a foreign country. With Performance and Guten Morgen, Ihr Völker , the author devotes himself to politics and deals with the negative consequences of a neoliberal economic system. Jockey's theme is the development of interpersonal relationships in the face of dating platforms. Helminger is also the title holder of the bestseller Who am I - and if so, how many? by Richard David Precht .
From 2010 to 2012 Guy Helminger presented the program KULTUR and from 2012 to 2017 the program "DNA" on RTL Luxembourg. In Cologne he has been moderating the Literary Salon and other events of the Literaturhaus since 2006 (together with Navid Kermani).
In 2012 Guy Helminger held the poetics lectureship at the University of Duisburg-Essen. His lectures appeared under the title: "Guy Helminger" A language anatomist at work. "Together with essays on his work.
His older brother Nico Helminger is also a writer.
