Adolphe Dzokanga

Adolphe Dzokanga (* 1942 in Makotipoko ; † August 1998 near Paris) was a Congolese linguist and pioneer in the research and dissemination of the Lingala language .

Youth and education

Adolphe Dzokanga was born in 1942 in Makotipoko , on the banks of the Congo . He is descended from the Moye , who belong to the Bangala ethnic group and are traditionally fishermen. He studied Lingála , Bobangi , French and Latin with missionaries in Bolobo , then at the Ipoto Teachers' College in Zaire . He then continued his studies in France and did his doctorate at INALCO in Paris. Dzokanga died in August 1998 in the greater Paris region.

Career

Adolphe Dzokanga helped promote the lingala, which he taught at the Sorbonne and at the National Institute for Oriental Languages ​​and Civilizations (INALCO). He wrote reference books for teaching and teaching the language (dictionaries, handbooks) and translated important texts, including the Declaration of Human Rights .

He was also a journalist for the Voice of the Congolese Revolution and professor at the Université Marien-Ngouabi in Brazzaville

He participated in the etymological research to determine the origin of Lingala, which he described as the original language of the Bangàla ethnic group, and probably coming from the Bobangi. Adolphe Dzokanga remained cautious about the origin of the language
