Adolphus Bonzano

Adolphus Bonzano (born December 5, 1830 in Ehingen , Württemberg , † May 5, 1913 in Philadelphia ) was a German-American civil engineer and bridge builder.

Life

Bonzano received a polytechnical education and came to New York City in September 1850, but immediately drove on to Philadelphia, where he learned the English language. From 1851 to 1855 he was with the American Machine Works in Springfield (Illinois) . In 1855 he set up machines in the southern United States (New Orleans). From 1855 to 1868 he lived in Detroit. In 1857 he married Laura Goodell, with whom he had two sons. Until 1860 he mainly supervised machine workshops and shops, after which he worked in bridge construction. From 1868 he was chief engineer of the Phoenix Bridge Company (then Clarke Reeves & Co.) in Phoenixville (Pennsylvania) , which was the leading bridge construction company in the USA towards the end of the 19th century. He was also a partner in the company.

He is the inventor of a connection between railroad tracks (Bolzano rail joint).
