The Adrar Tamgak (also Adragh Tamgak ) is a mountain range up to 1988  m high in the Aïr high mountains in Niger .

geography

The Adrar Tamgak is located in the east of the Aïr and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Aïr and Ténéré nature reserve . It reaches its highest point with 1988  m in its southern part.

The mountain range is divided into a northern and a southern section by a deep, arching gorge in a west-east direction. The western entrance to the gorge is about five kilometers from the village of Iférouane . Its eastern exit leads into the sand dunes of the Ténéré southwest of the Chiriet massif. The Tamgak Gorge was created by overlapping plutons . The mega- breccias to be found there also point to the volcanic origin of the valley. At the side canyons, water flows underground to the surface, creating large pools of water, especially in the western part.

A small Anubis baboon population can be found in the massif . The gueltas in the gorge also attract gazelles , mouflons , rodents and birds of prey .

History and culture

Nomadic Tuaregs live in the gorge . The name Adrar Tamgak means "inhabited mountain that hides many things". This is an indication that it has long served as a retreat.

A complete crossing of the gorge with camels takes at least six days. The first European to walk this route was Frenchman Burthe d'Annelet in 1930.
