The North Borneo War Memorial is a monument that the North Borneo Chartered Company in memory of the fallen of the First World War on 8 May 1923 in Bond Street in Jesselton , British North Borneo had erected. The monument is now in the city park of Kota Kinabalu , the capital of the Malaysian state of Sabah .

Description of the monument

The memorial was originally erected on Bond Street, now Jalan Gaya. When it was relocated to KK City Park in the 1970s, the plinth underwent changes in shape and height. In addition, the monument was expanded to include a bronze plate on the obelisk and a plaque on the site of the earlier cannon.

Original form

The monument originally consisted of an approximately 2.5 m high obelisk from granite and a gun, which were each placed on a separate narrow rectangular base with semi-circular ends. Both bases were mounted on a second, common base.

Today's form

The shape of the obelisk was not changed, but the original unit of the base plate is no longer given. The cannon base was placed about 3 meters from the obelisk, but without a gun. In place of the cannon there is a memorial plaque today.

Original inscription

The original decoration included a relief carved into the stone in the form of a laurel wreath with the inscription To The Glorious Death 1914–1918 and a marble slab in the second pyramid stone . The marble slab lists the names of 13 fallen soldiers of the First World War:

ROLL OF HONOR
MT Buckley
A. Craigh
HW Chalmers
FH Davies
SJ Gooding
HSHH Hall
AM Kennedy
LAPrior
BDR Sherbrooke
EN Savage
RRM Tabutea

HM Woolley

Extensions

On the opposite side of the marble slab (westward direction) a bronze plaque was mounted with the following inscription:

In Memory Of Those Men
- of -
THE AUSTRALIAN ARMED FORCES
Who Gave Their Lives In the Defense Of
SABAH (BRITISH NORTH BORNEO)
During The Second World War 1939–1945

Presented By
The Returned Services League
Of Australia

The identical text is in gold letters on a black plaque on the former cannon base.

On the north side of the obelisk a memorial plaque was placed for the victims during the Konfrontasi period .

inauguration

The BNB War Memorial , as the memorial was initially called, was ceremoniously unveiled by Major General Sir Neill Malcolm on Tuesday, May 8, 1923 at 10 a.m. The presence of HMS Hawkins and an honor guard made up of members of the Royal Navy , World War I veterans and the British North Borneo Armed Constabulary gave the event a military setting. The guests included Governor Sir William Rycroft, Admiral Arthur Leveson, the Bishops of Labuan and Sarawak, and Ms. Stotter. Bishop Danson dedicated the obelisk and delivered a speech, which was followed by greetings from representatives of the Catholics, Muslims and Sikhs, as well as a speech by Sir Neill Malcolm.

Others

In 2012, as part of the exhibition "Bonding with Gaya Street (BGS)", an imitation of the monument made of bamboo and tropical wood was installed in its former location to commemorate the former location of the monument on Bond Street .

Possibly the committee for the erection of the memorial was based on the De Fontaine Memorial from 1912, whose external shape is strikingly similar to the North Borneo War Memorial.
