Adrenalin OD was an American hardcore band from Elmwood Park ( New Jersey ), which existed from 1981 to 1990 and were assigned to the New York hardcore scene.

history

Adrenalin OD emerged from the punk band The East Paterson Boys Choir, which was founded in the late 1970s. The first release were two pieces on the sampler New York Thrash of ROIR , one of the earliest evidence of the New York hardcore culture. To release their own sound carriers, the band founded the Buy Our Records label, which also released albums from several other punk and hardcore bands from New Jersey. For their first EP Let's Barbeque , Adrenalin OD could only afford 15 minutes of studio time and therefore recorded the six intended tracks in one go and without overdubbing . After the EP was released, guitarist Foster was replaced by Bruce Wingate. From then on, the line-up remained stable except for the post of bassist. Keith Hartel played bass on the third studio album Cruising With Elvis In Bigfoot's UFO , produced by Ramones producer Daniel Rey, followed by Wayne Garcia on Ishtar . Ishtar, produced by Dictators bassist Andy Shernoff, was so poorly received by the press and fans that the band broke up. An EP ( Sentimental Abuse , 1996) and an LP ( Themes , 2001) with demo recordings from the early 1980s were released posthumously .

As part of a short-lived reunion in 1996, the band gave a concert on the premises of the radio station WFMU , which was released on the LP Phat n'Old . In 1999, the band came together again to at the request of Fat Mike out a song for the compilation Short Music for Short People on Fat Mike's label Fat Wreck Chords to write and record. The result was a 31 second piece called Your Kung Fu Is Old ... and Now You Must Die !!! . Since then the band has appeared occasionally for reunion shows.

After the breakup of Adrenalin OD, Jack Steeples played guitar in the punk band Mental Decay, with whom he recorded three singles between 1989 and 1995, on which he also played bass and to which he contributed some songs. From 1995 to 1999 he played bass in the power pop band The Kowalskis, with whom he recorded an album. In 1999 he founded the band SUX with Richard, which had existed for ten years, but was a purely hobby project and did not publish anything. In 1994, Paul Richard was a founding member of the Kowalskis as a bassist, who were then called Killer Kowalski. In 1995 he switched to guitar and recruited steeples for bass. From 1999 he played with Steeples at SUX. Bruce Wingate and Wayne Garcia initially played in a band called Bruce Wayne after the end of Adrenalin OD; Wingate has since played in numerous smaller bands. The latter also applies to drummer Dave Scott, who now lives in Florida, which makes it difficult to perform together with the rest of the band. Only the first guitarist Jon Foster, as a founding member of Electric Frankenstein , achieved national fame after the dissolution of Adrenalin OD

Style and classification

Adrenalin OD played fast hardcore in the style of DC Hardcore , which was supplemented with Thrash Metal elements and occasionally with seemingly psychedelic passages. The lyrics were often humorous. The band's perception in public was shaped by the two elements of speed and humor. With the third album Cruising With Elvis In Bigfoot's UFO , the band turned away from hardcore and played melodic punk with reduced tempo.

Like the Misfits , Adrenalin OD came from New Jersey, but was oriented towards New York, which is immediately adjacent to the east. From Elmwood Park , the small town of 20,000 that Adrenalin OD came from, it was only 15 km to Manhattan , and there were hardly any performance opportunities in New Jersey itself. Accordingly, Adrenalin OD performed primarily in New York clubs, toured with Agnostic Front and Cause for Alarm and was represented on NYHC samplers.
