Adrian Monger

Adrian Calero Monger (born December 6, 1932 in Mount Lawley , Perth , † July 9, 2016 in Perth) was an Australian rower who won an Olympic bronze medal in 1956.

Adrian Monger started out doing athletics and boxing. He began rowing while studying at Geelong Grammar School and also rowed while at the University of Melbourne . In 1953 he won the Australian university championship in eight , in 1954 and 1956 he was Australian champion in the eighth.

At the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 a total of ten eights competed, with Michael Aikman , David Boykett , Angus Benfield , James Howden , Garth Manton , Walter Howell , Adrian Monger, Bryan Doyle and helmsman Harold Hewitt rowing in the Australian eighth . The Australians won ahead of the boats from Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. In the semifinals, the US eight won ahead of the Australians, from the other semifinals the Canadians and the Swedes reached the final. In the final, the US eight won with two seconds ahead of the Canadians, two seconds behind the Australians crossed the finish line in third with nine seconds ahead of the Swedes.

After the Olympic Games, Monger ended his sporting career and worked as a stockbroker for eight years. He then returned to the Geelong Grammar School as a teacher and rowing coach , where he stayed for ten years. In 1975 he moved to Perth and taught at Scotch College , where he was in charge of the college's rowing team from 1975 to 2007.
