Adrianus Straathof

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adrianus Gerardus Maria Straathof (born February 24, 1955 in Utrecht ) is a large Dutch agrarian who operated several pig breeding facilities, especially in eastern Germany, including the largest pig rearing facility in Germany.

Working life

In 1996, Straathof bought a former chicken breeding facility in the Dutch province of Gelderland and built a two-story pig breeding facility there - initially without official approval. In the beginning there were regular problems with the authorities. In a major fire in 2017, 20,000 animals died there. After Straathof had acquired a pig breeding business in Gladau in Saxony-Anhalt in the 1990s, he quickly built up a company with many pig breeding facilities, according to his own information, in Hungary with a total of around 65,000 sows in 2013.

Conviction for cruelty to animals

In 2009, the veterinary authorities in Saxony-Anhalt criticized the lack of treatment of injured animals. Starting in 2013, negative reports about Straathof's management appeared regularly in the media and the authorities filed criminal charges for the first time. After several proceedings, he was sentenced in 2019 with an eight-month suspended sentence and an occupational ban.
