On April 30, 1953, an Ilyushin Il-12 P ( aircraft registration number: CCCP-L1777, serial number: 93013114, completed on March 24, 1949) had to fly on the 1st section of the inner-Soviet scheduled flight Aeroflot flight 35 from Moscow via Kazan to Novosibirsk in the Volga must be ditched, whereby one of the 23 inmates died.

The Il-12 took off from Moscow at 19:11 and climbed to an altitude of 1,200 m, where the flight took place under visual flight rules . After flying over Surowaticha, the pilots noticed clouds along with thunderstorm activity, sank to an altitude of 600–700 m and turned north. They flew on visual flight in the direction of the Volga past a railway bridge and entered the airspace around Kazan Airport at a height of 600 m. After the aircraft crossed the southern bank of the Volga, the pilots asked for permission to fly a circle on approach at 21:33. Permission was given and the pilots sank to 300 m. At 9:37 p.m. there was a thud over the Volga, which literally went black for a moment. Both engines lost thrust and there were flames from the engine outlets. After discovering a fire in the engines, the pilots tried unsuccessfully to bring their propellers into the sail position . The plane quickly lost altitude and the captain decided to make an emergency landing in the Volga and landed the plane near the bank.
The interior of the aircraft began to fill with water. The door to the cockpit was blocked by items of cargo that were placed in the front passenger cabin, but could be cleared again with the help of a few passages. According to a passenger, the crew announced that they would land in shallow water. However, this made evacuation difficult because some passengers tried to get their luggage off the aircraft instead of leaving it immediately. Ultimately, all occupants were able to leave the Il-12, which sank to a depth of 18 m, and remained on the water until local residents came to help with boats. However, a passenger wearing a coat could not stay afloat long enough and drowned.
root cause
The plane was recovered from the Volga on May 16, 1953. It was determined that the plane had collided with a flock of ducks over the Volga. The remains of a duck were found between the cylinders of the left engine. A second hit the area above the cockpit glazing with such force that a stringer was deformed as well as the cladding of the magnetic switch, which closed its switch. At the same time, the operating switch of the emergency magnetic switch was jerked to "Off", thus cutting a cable. As a result, the ignition of both engines was switched off and the mixture in the engines was no longer ignited in the cylinders, but only in the engine outlets, which the passengers and crew mistakenly took for flames.
In addition, the pilots could not bring the propellers into the sail position because the generators of the failed engines turned too slowly and thus could not generate enough tension. The batteries that supplied the power for the radio and the cabin lighting could not do this either.
