On June 28, 1982, a Yakovlev Yak-42 crashed on Aeroflot flight 8641 , a scheduled flight from Leningrad to Kiev , due to a mechanical defect in the trim of the horizontal stabilizer . All 132 inmates were killed in the crash.
crew
The crew consisted of flight captain Vyacheslav Nikolayevich Musinsky, first officer Alexander Sergejewitsch Stigarew, flight engineer Viktor Ivanovich Kedrov and navigator Nikolai Semenowitsch Vinogradov and four flight attendants.
course
At 9:01 a.m. Moscow time , the one-year-old Yakovlev Jak-42 took off from Pulkovo Airport as flight SU8641 and climbed to an altitude of 9,000 meters. At 10:48:58 a.m., the pilots reported the beginning of the descent. The air traffic controller instructed to descend to 7,800 meters, which the pilots also confirmed. For the descent, the autopilot set the horizontal stabilizer to + 0.3 °. At 10:51:30 a.m. the tailplane suddenly deflected completely (+ 2 °). Just three seconds later, the autopilot countered and set the CPR to -5 °. It remained in this position for three seconds, then the autopilot deactivated and the CPR angle increased again, causing the aircraft to dive . When the pilots pulled the elevators fully back, the aircraft was already tilting 50 ° down and 35 ° to the left. The incline to the left increased to 90 ° and the Jak-42 fell in a spiral downward. The Jak-42 broke into several parts at 10:51:50 at an altitude of 5700 m, at a speed of 810 km / h and a rate of descent of 300 m / s due to overload. The debris fell to the ground near Werbowitschi , 10 km southwest of Naroulja . All 132 occupants of Flight 8641 died. It was the worst aircraft accident in what is now Belarus and the worst accident involving a Yakovlev Jak-42.
Cause of accident
The cause of the crash was the uncontrolled deflection of the horizontal stabilizer. The tailplane trim had been incorrectly installed, resulting in increased wear and corrosion on the thread . During the unfortunate flight, the thread was so worn that the trim rod slipped through and got stuck on the limiting nut. The mother also gave in shortly afterwards, and the loose horizontal stabilizer brought the plane into a dive.
consequences
The entire Jak-42 fleet was not allowed to take off until the problem with the trim was corrected and was only released again at the end of 1984.
