On August 3, 1969, an Antonov An-24 crashed on the domestic flight Aeroflot flight N-826 from Dnipropetrovsk to Vinnytsia shortly after take-off, killing all 55 occupants.

plane

The aircraft involved was a two-year-old Antonov An-24 B with the air vehicle registration СССР-46248, which had completed its first flight on March 23, 1967th

course

At 3:47 p.m. local time, the aircraft took off at a planned cruising altitude of 5100 m . At 3:58 p.m., the pilots made radio contact with Dnipropetrovsk air traffic control and confirmed that they had reached an altitude of 3600 m. They were instructed to climb 4200 m. When the pilots did not confirm this, the air traffic controller tried unsuccessfully to establish radio contact at 16:06. Rescue workers found the wreck 58 km from Dnepropetrovsk Airport.

root cause

In the course of the investigation, propeller blade No. 2 of the left propeller was found at a distance of 4.5 km from the main crash site. The left propeller itself was found 1210 m from propeller blade No. 2 and 4 km from the crash site. It was concluded that propeller blade No. 2 broke off while climbing at an altitude of 4000 m from the left propeller. After that, it pierced the fuselage and severed the control rods of the elevator , ailerons and rudder , making it impossible to control the aircraft. The aircraft leaned to the left and went into a descent and, with increasing speed and bank, into a spiral dive . The aircraft finally hit the left at 4 p.m. at a speed of 500 to 550 km / h , a vertical inclination of −14 ° and a bank angle of 45 to 50 ° and exploded. The cause of the propeller blade breakage was found to be material fatigue of the propeller blade housing due to corrosion .
