Aetalionidae is a family of the Membracoidea and is sometimes called "false humpback hoppers". The Aetalionidae are a relatively poor family with about 40 species.
features
They can be about 3 to 30 mm in size and are closely related to the "real" humpback hoppers ( Membracidae ). But they do not have such a strongly developed pronotum as this one. The scutellum is basal convex and has a keel apically. In the front legs, the femur and trochanter have grown together.
Systematics
The Aetalionidae are divided into two subfamilies:
- Aetalioninae , with the genera
-
Biturritiinae with the genera
- Biturritia (3 types),
- Lophyraspis (6 species),
- Mina (3 types) and
- Tropidaspis (7 species).
distribution
Most species are common in the Neotropic , Aetalion quadratum and Aetalion nervosopunctatum are also known from the USA. The genus Darthula has been found in the Oriental region (China, India, Myanmar, Nepal).
Way of life
These cicadas are often found in groups and are often associated with ants. The widespread species Aetalion reticulatum is harmful to various tropical crops.
