The figure of Afanti (" Effendi ") was inspired by the famous figure of Nasreddin Hodscha , who is found in large parts of the Turkic-speaking Muslim world. The artistic design of the series was done by Qu Jianfang .

The cartoon series was produced from 1979 to 1988 . She tells the adventures of Afanti (Effendi), a person in the Muslim region of Xinjiang , who always roams around on his donkey , is very clever and likes to play with words to achieve his goals. He castigates the inadequacies of the people and has the courage to oppose the exploitation by the powerful and the rich - especially Mr. Bayi (= Beg). He is also full of compassion towards the poor people whom he tries to help as best he can.
