Affonso Ávila

Affonso Ávila (born January 19, 1928 in Belo Horizonte , Minas Gerais state , † September 26, 2012 ibid) was a Brazilian journalist and writer. He is one of the most important Brazilian poets of modern times.

Life

Ávila was a son of Lindolfo de Ávila e Silva and his wife Liberalina de Barros Ávila. He was married to the writer Laís Corrêa de Araujo and had five children with her; including the later poet Carlos Ávila (* 1955).

After school and university, Ávila began to write for the magazine "Vocação". There he met his colleagues Fábio Lucas, Cyro Sigueira and Rui Mourão as well as his future wife. In addition to this job, he became a columnist for the magazine “ O Estado de S. Paulo ” in 1956 and founded the magazine “Tendência” the following year.

In 1969 he changed to the editorial staff of the magazine "Barroco" and headed it until 1996.

At the age of 84, Affonso Ávila died on September 26, 2012 in Belo Horizonte, where he found his final resting place.
