African Studies ( English for African Studies ) is a South African journal from Routledge Publishing and was published as Bantu Studies by Witwatersrand University Press from 1921 to 1941 . It is one of the most important published collections in African studies .

history

Bantu Studies ( A Journal devoted to the Scientific Study of Bantu , Hottentot , & Bushman ) was founded in 1921 by John David Rheinallt Jones with the support of the Council for Education, Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and published from 1922 by the Witwatersrand University Press. The first three volumes were published at irregular intervals between 1921 and 1929. From Volume IV (1930), Bantu Studies was published quarterly. African Studies Volume I corresponds to Bantu Studies Volume XVI.

Until 1941, the focus was on anthropological and linguistic work on the Bantu group . The change of the name to African Studies should take into account the expanded scope of the journal to all of Africa.

African Studies is now published four times per year. Routledge is part of the Taylor & Francis publishing group .

Since 2011, the Vilakazi Prize, named after Benedict Wallet Vilakazi , has been awarded to the best submitted article in a band.
