features

African large-scale tetra reach a maximum body length of 8 cm. In males the anal fin is striped red-yellow-black, while the females have a black point on the anal fin.

Fin formula : dorsal 2/10, anal 3/11.

Occurrence

The African large scale tetra occurs in peat-rich rivers in Cameroon and Lagos up to the Niger Delta . He prefers waters that have a slightly acidic pH and water temperatures of 23 to 28 ° C.

Way of life

African large scale tetra are carnivores and peaceful schooling fish. They occur in groups of 10 or more animals. They are typical free spawners , which means that, unlike the foam nest builders or the mouth brooders, they simply release their eggs into the open water. About 800 to 1000 eggs that are about 1.2 mm in size are laid. The larvae hatch after 36 hours at the latest. The young animals spend the first time in a swarm.
