The denison barbel ( Sahyadria denisonii , syn .: Crossocheilus denisonii , Puntius denisonii ), also called red stripe barbel or red stripe torpedo fish , is a freshwater fish belonging to the carp-like order . It occurs in India in fast-flowing mountain streams of the Western Ghats in the states of Kerala and Karnataka .

The denison barbel becomes 15 centimeters long. Your body is elongated and spindle-shaped. Their upper side is olive-colored, the underside whitish. A black longitudinal band extends along the flanks, which is accompanied by the eponymous red band in the first half of the body. The first rays of the dorsal fin are also red, the tips of the caudal fin are marked by a black and white spot. Outside the spawning season, specimens of both sexes look the same, while the females are fuller during the spawning season.

Way of life

The Denison barbel inhabits fast flowing streams and rocky bays with dense bank vegetation and is sociable. It feeds mainly on plants, but also eats insect larvae and other invertebrates .
