Sahyadria is a species of carp fish found in southwest India with few species. The range includes twelve rivers in the Western Ghats , which flow westward and flow into the Arabian Sea .

features

Sahyadria species grow to be 8.5 to 19 cm long and are slimmer and more elongated than other South Asian barbel. It is characterized by a broad, black longitudinal stripe that runs from the mouth to the base of the caudal fin and above it a scarlet band from the mouth to the middle of the body (different for different populations). In between, starting at the gill cover , there is a narrow yellow band. The tips of the forked caudal fin are black, with a yellow band underneath. A black spot may be seen on the dorsal fin. The front dorsal fin rays are scarlet red in juvenile fish.

Your dorsal fin is supported by three to four undivided and eight branched fin rays, whereby the last one can already be divided at the base, giving the impression of a ninth ray. The last undivided fin ray of the dorsal fin is weak, segmented towards the tip and not serrated. In the anal fin there are two to three undivided fin rays and five branched. The sideline is complete and extends over 26 to 28 scales with pores. Free uroneuralia are absent. The gill traps are simple (not branched or flattened). They stand in two rows with 12 and 18 rays.

species

The genus includes two species, but these have a total of 6 evolutionary lines.

Systematics

The genus was only established in November 2013 for two species previously placed in Puntius . The generic name Sahyadria corresponds to a local name for the Western Ghats. Sister genus of Sahyadria is Dawkinsia . The clade formed by both is in a sister group relationship to a clade from Puntius and Systomus .
