Dawkinsia is a South Asian genus of carp fish (Cyprinidae). All species of the genus are endemic only in southern India or Sri Lanka . The genus, which was only established in the summer of 2012, includes nine species that previously belongedto the collective genus Puntius ,grouped togetheras the Puntius filamentosus species group. The genus was named in honor of the evolutionary biologist and author of scientific and popular science literature, Richard Dawkins , in recognition of his achievements in spreading the theory of evolution to the public.

features

Dawkinsia species normally reach a standard length of between 8 and 12 cm as fully grown fish . Only the type species, the black-spotted barb ( Dawkinsia filamentosa ) grows larger with a maximum length of 18 cm. The body of the Dawkinsia species is laterally flattened and elongated. Diagnostic features of the genus are the absence of rostral barbels , the presence or absence of maxillary barbels, the smooth last unbranched ray of the dorsal fin, 4 unbranched and 8 branched dorsal fin rays, 3 unbranched and 5 branched anal fin rays, a complete lateral line with 18 to 22 Scales, simple, pointed gill rakes (not branched or flattened like a lamella), free uroneuralia , 4 to 5 vertebrae with spinous processes (supraneurals), 15 vertebrae in the abdomen and 14 to 17 vertebrae in the caudal spine and the slender infraorbital bone No. 3 (bones around the eyes ), which does not overlap the gill cover .

Junvenile Dawkinsia specimens, less than 5 cm in length, show a color pattern of three dark bands on the sides of the body, which can be retained in adults or disappear except for a black, horizontally elongated spot on the tail stalk.
