Afzalgarh is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh .

The city is part of the Bijnor district . Afzalgarh is about 421 km northwest of Lucknow and near the border with Uttarakhand . Afzalgarh has the status of Nagar Palika Parishad . The city is divided into 25 wards . Afzalgarh had 29,101 inhabitants as of the 2011 census date, of whom 15,215 were men and 13,886 women.

The city was founded in the mid-18th century by a local leader named Nawab Afzal Ali Khan who also built a fort in the area that was dismantled after the Indian uprising of 1857 .
