Against the Wind is an Australian television series from 1978.
action
The series begins in 1790. In Ireland, which was then occupied by Great Britain, Mary Mulvane (Mary Larkin) is sentenced to forced labor and deportation to New South Wales , now Australia. At the time, the prisons in Great Britain were overcrowded and alleged criminals were often deported, because not everyone convicted was guilty, to New South Wales. Not only did this relieve the prisons, it also brought workers to New South Wales. On the long crossing, the prisoners are at the mercy of the sadistic captain. He has the prisoners mistreated and also carries out the mistreatment on the female prisoners himself. In this situation, Mary befriends Polly McNamara (Kerry McGuire). In addition, Mary becomes enemies with the arrogant officer Greville (Warwik Sims), who takes over a command in New Southwales.
On arrival in New South Wales, the poor condition of the prisoners is noticed. They are given a few days of rest for light work (sewing work). Then the prisoners are sold for forced labor. Mary is sold to Army Captain Wiltshire. The inn owner Will Price (Frank Gallacher), who is also looking for prisoners, attracts Polly. Polly lets a ball of wool roll in his direction, he picks it up, starts talking to her and decides to take her with him. Both lead a harmonious, marriage-like relationship from the start. Mary has to do work in the house of the captains and serve his wife. It is a big household, and many other prisoners are less fortunate than they are. There she meets Johnatan. In episode 12, Officer Greville participates in an attempted coup against the governor. In printed leaflets the governor is portrayed as an incompetent sick person, a. is quoted "Not today, because I have gout."
In episode 13, Mary and Johnatan marry and run a farm. Scottish soldiers are shown in the credits.
