Agia Varvara ( Greek Αγία Βαρβάρα ( f. Sg. ) 'Saint Barbara', named after the main church of the place) is a small town with the status of an urban district in the municipality of Gortyna near the island capital Heraklion on the island of Crete .
The busy north-south connection from Heraklion to the Messara plain and the south coast of the island runs through Agia Varvara .
