Agios Gordios ( Greek Άγιος Γόρδιος , locally also Ai Gordis Άη Γόρδης ( m. Sg. )) Is a village on the west coast of the Greek island of Corfu . It belongs to the municipality of Achillio and is mainly known as a holiday resort due to its sandy bay. The neighboring villages are Sinarades in the north and Kato Garouna in the south.

Names and history

The village is named after the church of St. Gordios, which is near the beach in the center of the village. The date of construction is not known, the first mention of it is in 1714.

Agios Gordios was recognized in 1971 as a settlement of the then rural community Kato Garouna (Κοινότητα Κάτω Γαρούνας Kinotita Kato Garounas ), which has had the status of a local community since the administrative reform in 2010 ( Τοπική ΓοινΓαρς Garαú Garouna .

Trivia

Freddy Mercury , the lead singer of Queen, is said to have visited the place a few times. The hotel and hostel, The Pink Palace, supposedly got its name from him.
