Agios Ioannis ( Greek Άγιος Ιωάννις ( m. Sg. )) Describes a local community and at the same time a mountain village on the Greek island of Crete . In 2011 the actual place had 8 inhabitants. The local community of Agios Ioannis, consisting of Agia Fotia , Ferma , Xirokamara and the main town of Koutsounari , had 1168 inhabitants.

The local community of Agios Ioannis extends over 32.397 km² in the south-east of the island, east of the district of Ierapetra. The area extends over 7 km along the coast and more than 6 km into the hinterland where the Thripti Mountains rise to 1476 m above sea level. The summit marks the border with the neighboring local communities Orino in the northeast and Schinokapsala in the east. To the north-west it borders Kato Chorio . Near the coast, the road runs between Ierapetra and Sitia, with the towns of Xirokamara, Koutsounari, Ferma and Agia Fotia. Agios Ioannis is located in the middle of the Thripti Mountains at about 501 meters above sea level with a good view of the sea and is surrounded by olive groves .
history
The rural community of Agios Ioannis ( Kinotita Agiou Ioannou Κοινότητα Αγίου Ιωάννου) was founded in 1925. In 1961 Agia Fotia, Ferma and Koutsounari were recognized as settlements. The administrative headquarters moved to Koutsounari in 1984. The municipality reform in 1997 resulted in the incorporation into Ierapetra . Since the administrative reform in 2010 , Agios Ioannis has the status of a local community ( Topiki Kinotita Τοπική Κοινότητα). The Xirokamara settlement was recognized in 2011.
