Margravine Agnes of Baden (born March 25, 1408 ; † January 1473 in Ebersteinburg ) was a Duchess of Schleswig, Countess of Holstein and a born margravine of Baden .

Life

She was a daughter of Margrave Bernhard I of Baden from her second marriage to Anna von Oettingen (* around 1380; † November 9, 1436).

Agnes von Baden became known through the premature birth of her twins , which triggered a violent inheritance dispute. The dispute went down in history as "The Gottorf Twin Fall ". Only three months after the official consummation of the marriage with Duke Gerhard VII. Agnes von Baden fell on the stairs and gave birth to twins. It was clear to every observer that the children could not have been conceived after the marriage and that there was unrest. Only when Gerhard VII confessed to cohabiting prematurely did the minds calm down again. However, when the duke died early on a trip, fatherhood was again questioned and the brother of Gerhard VII, Adolf VIII, took possession of the children. Agnes, who was not allowed to return to Schleswig-Holstein, fled to Baden and offended her brother Margrave Jakob I of Baden in his efforts to enforce the claims of his nephews.

When Agnes thwarted her brother's further marriage plans by becoming engaged to Hans von Höwen, an admirer from earlier days, the margrave was so upset that he interned Agnes at Eberstein Castle for the rest of her life . The margrave planned to marry Agnes to the Duke of Silesia-Oels, whose sister in turn should be married to Adolf VIII in order to save the inheritance. The failure so annoyed the margrave that no pleading soothed him and he himself ordered another internment in his will. Agnes died blindly at the end of her life at Eberstein Castle in the first weeks of 1473.

Agnes von Baden's first marriage was on June 2, 1432, Count Gerhard VII of Holstein-Schauenburg (* 1404; † July 24, 1433) and became engaged to Hans von Höwen in 1434 († after 1467).

The following children were born from the marriage:

  • Heinrich (born January 16, 1433), twin; drowned while playing, probably murdered
  • Katharina (born January 16, 1433; † 1434), twin, made a nun at the age of one and died early, probably murdered.
