Swami Agnivesh

Swami Agnivesh (Hindi: अग्निवेश; born September 21, 1939 in Sakti , Chhattisgarh , India ; born Vepa Shyam Rao ) from a Telugu-speaking family is a Samnyasin in the Hindu tradition, politician and social activist.

Agnivesh studied law and business management and was a lecturer in business and law in the Department of Law and Business Management at the prestigious St. Xavier's College of Calcutta .

He is the President of the World Council of Arya Samaj . He is Founder Coordinator of the Parliament of All Faiths and was Chairperson of the UN Trust Fund on Contemporary Forms of Slavery in Geneva.

In 1981 Agnivesh founded the forced labor liberation front Mutki Morcha against child labor .

He received the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize) in Sweden and the Freedom and Human Rights Prize (1994) from the Bern Foundation for Freedom and Human Rights in Switzerland .

From 1977 to 1982 he was a member of the Legislative Assembly and 1979 Minister of Education of Haryana .

He is a representative of Hinduism in the nine-member board of the King Abdullah Center for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue in Vienna .
