Agraval

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Agraval ( Hindi अग्रवाल agravāl ) is an Indian Jati (sub-caste) of traders.

The Agraval belongs to the Varna (upper caste) of the Vaishyas , which is the third of the traditional four castes. They come from Rajasthan and from there have spread throughout India with the merchant castes of the Maheshvaris, Osvals, Khandelvals and Porvals. Besides Hindus there are also followers of Jainism among them . It is not clear whether the name refers to the possible place of origin near Ujjain , Agar, or the mythical ruler Agrasen from the Suryavamsha dynasty. According to another hypothesis about the origin of the word, there could be a connection to Agra , which is not far from the original settlement area of the Agraval.
