Amthorstrasse residential complex

The residential complex on Amthorstrasse in Innsbruck was designed by the architect Josef Lackner and built in the 1990s.

architecture

The residential complex is located on Amthorstrasse, a residential area in Pradl in the east of Innsbruck. The building is embedded in the landscape thanks to its building mass formed by kinks and waves. The small, square bay windows that belong to every apartment and allude to traditional bay windows are particularly noticeable . At first glance it seems as if the bay windows were randomly placed on the facade , but when you step inside it becomes clear that the arrangement is due to the staircases, which are always offset by half. The bay windows also represent the largest source of light, next to them there are only a few small windows . The apartments are oriented to the north or south.

While there are green areas on the south side that can be used by everyone and through which the building is also accessible, there are small gardens on the north side with beds for the individual residents. The parking spaces are also located in the north, overlooked by the residential building.

At the four entrances in the south, cracks in the facade give the impression that the building has been raised, which in turn underscores the wave movement. The same effect is achieved by the eye-catching roof structure, which corresponds to the entrance situation.

The building captivates above all with its color design, which is typical for the architect Lackner. The facade is kept entirely in yellow, individual spots of color emphasize the small bay windows.

philosophy

The aim was to create a simple residential building for affordable living that should counteract the constantly rising housing costs. That is why there are no lifts, cellars or underground parking in the entire building. In order to reduce energy consumption with the help of the bay windows, residents can reduce their size in winter and expand in summer. For Lackner, the focus was on the building as a total work of art , which should bring joy to the residents and in which one feels comfortable. So it was particularly important to him that the standard of living did not fall despite the savings in construction costs. Today the innovative residential complex is managed by Neue Heimat Innsbruck, a western Austrian housing company.
