Location of Aguijan ( Aguiguan ) in the southern area of the Northern Mariana Islands |
Aguijan ( cham. Aguiguan ) is a small island of coralline origin in the Pacific Ocean . It belongs geographically to the arch of the islands of the Mariana Islands and politically to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands .
Aguijan is located about 8 km southwest of the island of Tinian and, with an area of 7.10 km², is the smallest island in the southern area of the archipelago. In Mount Alutom it reaches a height of 157 meters above sea level. The island is uninhabited and is rarely visited because of its steep coast. Because of the numerous wild goats , the island is also derisively called Goat Island . The goats have largely destroyed the native flora, but animal species still include smooth-nosed free- tailed tails (Emballonuridae) and the rare Lapérouse chicken ( Megapodius laperouse ).
On Aguijan was during the Second World War, a Japanese garrison, the soldiers on September 4, 1945, two days after the signing of the surrender of Japan , the US Coast Guard revealed. It was the only World War II surrender received by the US Coast Guard.
