Agwe

Agwe (also Agwé-Taroyo ) is a loa in the voodoo religion, especially in Haiti . Agwe is married to Erzulie . Agwe is ruler of the sea and its inhabitants as well as a patron saint for boatmen and seamen. In the voodoo cult he appears in the uniform of a naval officer and likes military discipline. Like the Greek god Poseidon , he also appears with a trident . Sailing ship and fish are common symbols for him.

The annual festival of Agwe is celebrated on the banks of lakes or on the beach. On the open sea, sacrifices are made to him like a sheep.

In Voodoo Agwe is with the Christian saint Ulrich of Augsburg syncretized and is considered the counterpart to the Zwillingsloa , the Marasa .

Agwe plays a role in the musical Once on This Island .
