Ahawat Olam

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ahawat Olam ( אַהֲבַת עוֹלָם , dt. Eternal Love ) is the second prayer that is recited during the Jewish evening prayer Maariv . It is the parallel blessing to Ahawa rabba , which is recited during the chacharit . Because of a compromise, Ahawa rabba is prayed to Shacharit (in the morning) and Ahawat Olam to Maariw in the evening. The Talmud provides various times when the prayer may be offered. Since Ahawa rabba is longer than Ahawat Olam, Ahawa Rabba is presented in the morning and Ahavat Olam in the evening. It is also thanks to God for the gift of the Torah.

- Siddûr tefillôt Yiśrāʾēl

“You have given the house of Yisrael your people an eternal love, have taught us doctrine and commandments, laws and legal systems. Therefore, God our God, when we lie down and when we get up, we ponder your laws and rejoice with the words of your teaching and with your commandments for eternal time; for they are our life and the duration of our days and our thoughts are occupied with them day and night. May you not withdraw your love from us in eternity, blessed be God, who loves his people Yisrael. "
