Ahmad the Terrible

Ahmad the Terrible is a jazz composition by Jack DeJohnette that he published in 1984.

Jack DeJohnette's composition Ahmad the Terrible , which he dedicated to Ahmad Jamal , has a 56-bar form; the theme is played twice before the solos follow. The melody is usually based on simple arpeggios in major chords. DeJohnette first recorded the track in June 1984 with his then band Special Edition on Album Album (ECM) with John Purcell , David Murray , Howard Johnson and Rufus Reid , and on his solo album The Jack DeJohnette Piano Album (Landmark Records, 1985). His composition was also interpreted by Michel Portal ( Men's Land (1987), with Dave Liebman and Harry Pepl ), Tierce ( Tierce à Cully , 1989), the formation Orange Then Blue ( Funkallero , 1991) and the Vasil Hadžimanov Band ( Života Mi , 2009). Most recently in 2014 DeJohnette played with The Spring Quartet (with Esperanza Spalding , Joe Lovano , Leo Genovese ) Ahmad the Terrible at the Burghausen Jazz Festival 2014.

According to the author Stuart Nicholson , DeJohnette created a classic with Ahmad the Terrible that demonstrates his talent as a composer, arranger and band leader.
