Stuart Nicholson (* 1948 ) is a British music journalist and author .

Life

Nicholson studied music at the Welsh College of Music and Drama . In the 1970s he led a jazz rock band and performed on the BBC , BBC Radio and ITV . His adaptation of a traditional Welsh folk song that he recorded with his band became the signature tune of BBC Radio Wales' Sportstime program for over ten years . In 1980 he ended his activity as an active musician in order to turn to music journalism, since 1991 full-time.

In 1990, Nicholson's first book, Jazz: The Modern Resurgence, was published on 1980s jazz, followed by biographies on Ella Fitzgerald , Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington ; He also contributed to The Cartoon Music Book (Daniel Goldmark, Yuval Taylor, 2002) and The Cambridge Companion to Jazz (2003) with a section on the swing era . He contributed to The Encyclopaedia of the Harlem Renaissance (2005) and is co-author of the anthology Future Jazz (2002).

Nicholson also wrote reviews of jazz and jazz rock in music magazines such as Jazzwise (including The 100 Jazz Albums That Shook the World , 2006) and for daily newspapers such as The Observer and The Guardian . He published reviews and features in JazzTimes ; also conducted a number of interviews for websites such as Jazz.com , etc. a. with Manfred Eicher and Nik Bärtsch . As a visiting professor in music journalism , he taught at Leeds College of Music.
