Ahmed Ateş (* 1911 in Birecik , † October 20, 1966 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish orientalist and researcher of Persian literature.

Life

Ateş was the son of Mustafa Ateşzade, an inspector from Konya . Ateş therefore spent his childhood and youth in various cities in Anatolia. He also received his school education in several cities. From 1935 he studied both at a teaching college in Istanbul and Turkish language and literature at the University of Istanbul . Here he discovered his interest in Arabic, Persian and French philology.

At the University of Istanbul he became the first student of the famous German orientalist Hellmut Ritter . Ateş learned western scientific methods from Ritter. Ateş graduated in 1939 and became Knight's assistant. A year later he was elected to the editorial committee of the Turkish edition of the Encyclopaedia of Islam , the respected İslâm Ansiklopedisi , on which he worked until the end of his life.

In 1947, Ateş was a founding member of the International Society for Oriental Research . When Ritter left Turkey in 1949, Ateş succeeded him as chairman of the Oriental Institute in Istanbul and the faculties of Arabic and Persian philology.

He made several works available to the scientific world from the large collection of Arabic, Persian and Turkish historical and cultural works that are in Turkish archives. Ateş devoted most of his career to Persian literature. His first publication was a textbook for Persian grammar ( Farsça grameri , 2 volumes, Istanbul 1942–45). Ateş wrote the work together with the Afghan scientist Abd-al-Wahhab Tarzi . The Farsça grameri was reissued several times and an expanded version is still used today at Turkish universities.

With Tahsin Yazıcı , Ateş developed a textbook on Persian grammar for clergy ( Farsça dilbilgisi ), with Nihat Çetin and Yazıcı he developed a textbook on Arabic grammar ( Arapça dilbilgisi ).
