Ahmet Tevfik İleri

Ahmet Tevfik İleri (* 1911 in Hemşin ; † December 31, 1961 in Ankara ) was a Turkish civil engineer, civil servant and politician of the Democrat Parti (DP). He was a member of parliament, transport minister, education minister and deputy prime minister.

Life

İleri was born in 1911 to Hafız Celal Efendi and Fatma Hanım in Rize Province . He spent his school days in Istanbul and graduated from İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi with a degree in civil engineering in 1933 . In the last year of his studies, he was chairman of the National Student Union (MTTB).

In 1933, at the age of 21, he became a responsible engineer in the General Directorate for Motorways in Erzurum . From 1937 to 1942 he was responsible for public building projects in Çanakkale , then from 1942 to 1946 in Samsun . From 1946 to 1950 İleri was manager of the highway authority in Samsun.

In 1950 İleri became a member of the Democrat Parti and became a member of the Turkish Grand National Assembly for the province of Samsun . During the years of government of the DP, İleri was one of the country's leading politicians. He was Minister of Transport from May 22 to August 11, 1950, and then Minister of Education from April 13 to November 25, 1957. From May 22, 1959 to December 8, 1959 he held the office again provisionally. From November 25, 1957 to January 19, 1958 İleri was Deputy Prime Minister and from January 19, 1958 to May 27, 1960 Minister of Public Works.

After the military coup in Turkey in 1960 , he was sentenced to imprisonment in the Yassıada trials . In 1961 he was hospitalized and died in Ankara on December 31st. He was buried in the Cebeci Asri cemetery in Ankara.
