Ahrweilerplatz (Düren)
The Ahrweiler place in the district town Düren ( Nordrhein-Westfalen ) is an ancient city road .
location
The square is between Oberstrasse and Wilhelmstrasse . The lane is signposted as a one-way street from Oberstraße. In the west the Ahrweilerplatz merges into the Annaplatz . There the Steinweg joins Ahrweilerplatz. The two squares surround the Anna Church, the central church of the St. Lukas parish in Düren.
history
The square used to be within the Düren city fortifications . Alexander Theodor Ahrweiler (1786–1868) was a meritorious donor for the Stiftisches Gymnasium . In his honor, the square, which was formerly known as the “Deutscher Friedhof” (after the German school located there), was named after him in 1881. The Beenes, an ossuary in which the bones unearthed from new graves were collected, stood on the square .
Todays use
There are various catering establishments at Ahrweilerplatz. In summer, open-air concerts under the title “Airweiler” take place on the square .
