The Anna Square in the district town Düren ( Nordrhein-Westfalen ) is an ancient city road .

location

The square is between Oberstrasse and Höfchen Strasse . It is developed as a traffic-calmed zone. In the west it turns into Ahrweilerplatz . The two squares surround the Anna Church, the central church of the St. Lukas parish in Düren.

history

The square used to be within the Düren city fortifications . Shortly after a stonemason had brought the Annahaupt from Mainz to Düren in 1501 , the previous Martinskirche was renamed Anna Church. The name of the church square should also be sought at this time. In 1550 it was stated in a document: “at deme plaze gnat zo Sent Annen”. This is how the southern, but also the northern part (today Ahrweilerplatz) was named. A distinction was made between the cemeteries on the north and south sides of the church in "Am Deutschen Kirchhof" and "Am Latinischer Kirchhof". The Latin school (1358–1636) was on the corner of the courtyard. The Jesuit grammar school was housed here from 1636 to 1774, then the collegiate grammar school until 1826 .

Todays use

To the west of Annaplatz are the Papst-Johannes-Haus and the parish hall of St. Anna. On the southern side there is a brewery and other business premises. At the Düren city festival, the twin cities present themselves on the square.
