Ahungalla is a small town on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka , which administratively belongs to the Galle District in the Southern Province . Ahungalla is known for its wide sandy beach accompanied by palm trees , which is considered one of the most beautiful on the island.

The place is about 15 km south of Bentota and 40 km north of the provincial capital Galle at Cape Ahungalla Point . The neighboring towns are Kosgoda in the north and Balapitiya in the south. The Madu Ganga mangrove area begins southeast of the city . Ahungalla is crossed by the A2 expressway , and there is also a train station on the railway line from Colombo to Matara , which runs past the site .

The largest and best-known building in the town is the luxury hotel Heritance Ahungalla (formerly Hotel Triton ) , designed by the Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa and built from 1979 to 1981 .

Like the entire region, Ahungalla was badly devastated by the tsunami of December 26, 2004 .
