On July 1, 1994, a Fokker F28-4000 Fellowship crashed while landing at Tidjikja airport on Air Mauritanie flight 625 (flight number IATA : MR625 , ICAO : MRT625 ) . When landing during a sandstorm , the machine came off the runway due to a broken landing gear and crashed into a ledge next to the airport. 80 of 93 people on board were killed in the accident.
It is the most momentous incident involving a Fokker F-28 and the most serious aircraft accident in Mauritania.
plane
The machine was built in 1975 as the first of only two copies of the Fokker F28 Fellowship 6000 at the Fokker plant at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol . The Fokker had the serial number 11092 and made its maiden flight on July 11, 1975. Just like its sister machine, the machine remained with the manufacturer, who leased the aircraft to various airlines. The machine was therefore put into operation with the Dutch aircraft registration PH-SIX , which it kept until 1983. The first lessee was the Swedish Linjeflyg from July 30, 1976 , followed by the NLM Cityhopper from April 17, 1978 . On February 4, 1979, the plane was returned to the lessor Fokker, who leased it to Libyan Arab Airlines from April 27, 1979, to Pars Air from July 26, 1980 and again to Linjeflyg from November 26, 1981 . In December 1983 the machine was converted into a Fokker F28 Fellowship 4000 and sold to Air Mauritanie . As part of this, the machine received the new aircraft registration 5T-CLF . The sister machine 5T-CLG , the other Fokker F28 Fellowship 6000, was also transferred to the fleet of this airline after a conversion to the -4000 version. The twin- engine short - haul aircraft was equipped with two Rolls-Royce Spey 555-15H engines.
Passengers, crew and flight plan
The domestic scheduled flight MR625 from Nouakchott to Tidjikja was operated with the machine . 89 passengers had started the flight and there was a crew of four on board.
the accident
When the plane approached Tidjikja, there was a severe sandstorm in the region. The pilots made several missed approaches . Finally, at 8:30 a.m., the machine made a hard landing that caused the landing gear to collapse. The machine went off the runway, slid against a ledge next to the airport and caught fire. The entire crew and 76 of the 89 passengers died in the accident. Only 13 passengers survived.
