Airball

As air ball ( english air ball , air ball ') is a player in the throwing attempt Basketball refer to operations where the ball completely missed the basket and touches neither the ring nor the board of the basket system.

The term has a negative connotation. Throwing an airball is not regarded as an ordinary failed attempt by players and spectators alike, but is commented ironically to maliciously. In professional basketball, airballs mainly occur in game situations with throws beyond the three-point line .

The long-time commentator on the Los Angeles Lakers , Chick Hearn , is sometimes attributed to have made the phrase popular. English dictionaries such as Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary list 1967 as the year of the first recorded use of the word. The Oxford English Dictionary refers to an article in Hayward (California) appeared Daily Review of 29 January 1967 which states: " Cal State , four times lofting air balls at an orange basket did may as well have been painted invisible. “Elsewhere the expression is used on the west coast of 1968 and on the east coast of the USA in 1971; later it is performed by groups in the audience as an insulting song.
