The Airport City is an emerging urban service center next to the Berlin airport BER on a gross floor area sqm of 210,000. Airport City is also part of the "BER 2040" master plan , which is intended to secure the handling capacities. The main reason for the original Airport City concept is the provision of new jobs after the closure of Tegel Airport . According to a study, the closure of Tegel Airport alone will cause 20,000 employees to migrate. The Airport City is connected directly to the terminal and the airport station connected. The former managing director of Lütke Daldrup Airport created the design for Airport City . According to the planners, 60,000 jobs will be created there in Airport City by 2037, including those from Tegel.

Development

The appearance of the Airport City is characterized by the high design quality of the buildings and open spaces. The Airport City thus surrounds Willy-Brandt-Platz as its center. Buildings with up to six storeys are to be realized on the variable construction areas of the square. The mix of uses should include office use, hotels and restaurants, meetings and congresses, and health and wellness. In addition, the Steigenberger Group has built a four-star superior hotel with 322 rooms and an attached conference and conference center. The hotel will go into operation when the BER opens, which is why it is only being serviced at the moment. Furthermore, a 3-star InterCity Hotel will be realized in the Airport City under the investor of Dietz AG. The Berlin-Brandenburg Airport Center (BAC) office and service center was built in 2012 by the GHP group of architects and has already started operations, for example. Pharmaceutical companies and airlines are housed in the office building in a total of 18,770 m² of office space. There are also 4 parking garages and a rental car center in the portfolio . According to the spokesman for the airport company, Ralf Kunkel, no large settlement projects are planned. Due to the persistent delays in the BER opening date, Airport City resembles a ghost town .
