Akimitsu Jun
Akimitsu Jun ( jap. 秋光 純 ; * 1939 in Hiroshima ) is a Japanese solid-state physicist .
Akimitsu studied at the University of Tokyo with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and his doctorate in 1970. He then worked at the Institute for Solid State Research at the University of Tokyo until 1976. From 1976 he was assistant professor and from 1982 he was professor at Aoyama-Gakuin University .
In 2001 he discovered magnesium diboride, a metallic superconductor with the highest transition temperature of 39 Kelvin. He then found other non-oxide superconductors with relatively high transition temperatures such as 18 Kelvin transition temperature and boron-doped silicon carbide.
In 2008 he received the James C. McGroddy Prize for New Materials for the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in non-oxide systems (laudation). In 1998 he received the Nishina Prize , in 2001 the Asahi Prize , in 2007 the Nishikawa Award, in 2001 the medal with purple ribbon and in 2003 the Bernd T. Matthias Prize.
